Stone circles, barrows and henges can be seen across the British Isles, they evoke a sense of wonder for a people about whose culture and beliefs we know next to nothing. Later cultures, that still lived when writing arrived in Britain, have had preserved some of their myths and memories, told by word of mouth until then, and have come down to us today. History, myth and legend were not discrete categories to them; there was only Story, stories whose yarns and threads are stitched into our landscape every bit as much as the henges and standing stones of the neolithic.
These tales are not set in a land faraway; they have precise locations, from Gwynedd to Moray, from Bamburgh to Thanet. A Holloway Less Steep

Holloway (noun):
A walking path or road that is much lower than the land on either side of it, because the ground has eroded (= worn away) over time
Imagine a river. A gathering of rain, accumulating into a rapid channel, flowing diligently to the collective sea. If all that water were to vanish, left behind would be a Holloway. Not one made by us, but by nature. The river takes the easiest path, carving out a smooth way over centuries of repetition. It will never flow uphill, never deviate except when obstacles get in the way.
A Holloway Less Steep is a rejection of the easy path, a conscious effort to take the harder road rather than fall into routine and rut. In this innovative poetry collection, each poem is a stepping stone on the road to freedom. Following the river from mouth to source, we unpick the threads which bind us to a passive path, enriching our lives with wild wonder.
To be truly alive in the magic of existence, we must engage ourselves in work. Especially if it is hard. That is how we free ourselves from the current and forge our own inspiring path.
THRESHOLD CONDITIONS: Tales from a Hospital for Persons of Irregular Constitution
A hospital for the kind of patient the textbooks do not mention.
Dr James Crowley wanted nothing more than a quiet life: a GP’s post in a Lincolnshire market town, a lifetime of earwax and constipation, and an early night. What he got was St Jude’s.
A former workhouse on the edge of Newmarket, St Jude’s is, on paper, a small and unremarkable A&E. In practice it admits a more particular clientele — patients of irregular constitution, for whom the usual textbooks are of limited use. James was hired on the strength of a single line in a covering letter, written late one evening after rather too much wine, claiming he was the great-nephew of Aleister Crowley.
He is not. Or so he believes.
Over one increasingly improbable year — a meddlesome NHS review, a two-hundred-year-old consultant, a romance with a nurse not entirely of this world, and a Fifth of November he will not soon forget — James learns that the threshold between the ordinary and the otherwise is a great deal thinner than his training allowed.
